The Government and NZAID have been trying to find a vessel to replace the sunken MV Princess Ashika while a new one is being built with aid funding from Japan.

 

Acting Marine Director, Viliami Tuipulotu, said they are keen on a vessel used in New Caledonia by Reef Shipping.

 

He told Radio Tonga News today negotiations are ongoing as the boat would need a few modifications. 

 

According to Viliami, it's very hard to get the perfect ship with the exact size, width and the size of the ramp for the outer islands for all these small details, needs to be considered.

 

He says the plan is to get an interim ferry up and running in time for the Christmas holidays.
