The long standing and historical working ties between Tonga and Japan still co
This is according to Japan's Ambassador to Tonga H.E Yasuo Takase during the commemoration last evening of the Emperor Akihito's 76th birthday in Nuku'alofa as well as marking 20 years of his enthronement to become leader of Japan. Fatai Fainga'a reports.
His Majesty King George Tupou the Fifth officiated at the reception together with HRH Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita among other guests.
In Ambassador Takase's speech he told guests that Japan has assisted Tonga in many ways and are committed for more in the future to ensure development in the Kingdom.
In economic co-operation, Japan has provided the total amount of over 230 million US Dollars in grant to Tonga until now. In May this year Japan hosted the fifth Pacific Leaders forum meting or PALM in Japan and committed itself to provide 50 billion yen to the PIF countries over the next three years. Also under the Pacific Environment Community Initiative, Japan announced to provide 6.8 billion yen approximately 68 million US Dollars worth for solar power generation and sea water desalination plants for forum island countries.
The Honourable Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Viliami Tangi represented the Tongan Government in thanking the Japanese Government for all their assistance to the Kingdom.
In his speech, Dr Tangi told guests that the two countries have had a long history and it clearly shows in the close cooperation between the Tongan and Japanese Royal Families as well as the assistance for the development of Education and Health.
Tonga has continued to benefit from Japan from assistance program particularly commendable of its sign and outreach whose aim is to support national development priority. They have provided export of squash, fish and lately seaweed and this has contributed to the development of our economy. But also to the closer trade co-operation, Japanese Volunteers in Tonga and sports such as rugby, there is a chance for our young people to interact and gain mutual benefits.
DR. Tangi says the good working ties is ongoing and looks forward for more collaboration in the future.
