08-09-09 03:36

Dr Natatua Pelesikoti Taufatofua has flown to Samoa to take up her new post as Manager for the Pacific Future program under the Pacific Island Forum's Environmental arm.

This is the first time a Tongan has been posted to such a position and Dr Taufatofua says she looks forward to her new responsibility as the Secretariat of the Pacific for Regional Environment Programme or SPREP's manager.

Dr Taufatofua says "It is no secret what we need to do to protect our environment, which is a choice in our hands."

Dr. Taufatofua says all countries in the region are vulnerable to environmental issues, especially climate change which is a global concern.  She says despite the choice to preserve our environment, it is solely up to us.

Dr Taufatofua encourages people to pursue a career in Science and similar related subjects. Career opportunities in such fields are everywhere especially with organisations such as SPREP

SPREP is one of the largest bodies under the Pacific Island Forum and was established so the PIF could focus on climate change, renewable energy, environmental planning and policy, governance, pollution and solid waste management
